چکیده

Proteins are polymers composed of 30 or more amino acids; some of them are essential dietary components, since they are not synthetized by human metabolic processes. They are crucial for healthy growth and development and influence major functions of the body. The infant’s first year is a critical time of rapid growth and development, which must be supported by a high rate of protein synthesis. Breast milk, as a single specific food source in the first months of life, is providing the total protein and essential amino acids required. Infant formulas have been designed for infants who cannot be breastfed. They should be similar to breast milk in their composition and their functional outcomes, insuring appropriate growth, optimal development, maturation of the immune system, easy digestion and healthy metabolic programming. By modifying their protein components, specific infant formulas have also been developed for specific needs. For example, partially hydrolyzed (prevention of atopic dermatitis) and extensively hydrolyzed or aminoacid-based infant formulas (reduction in allergy symptoms) have been designed for the management of cow’s milk protein allergy. In conclusion, proteins provided via breast milk or infant formula are essential components of the infant’s diet; therefore, the specific quality, quantity and conformation of proteins are of utmost importance for healthy growth and development. © 2016 Nestec Ltd., Vevey/S. Karger AG, Basel Proteins, Peptides and Amino Acids: Definitions Proteins, from the Greek proetios (meaning ‘first’), are a fundamental component for life. They are the second most abundant chemical compound in the body after water. Following digestion, dietary proteins are absorbed as amino acids, which then contribute to the total amino acid pool, from which the body’s Proteins, Peptides and Amino Acids: Role in Infant Nutrition

A systematic review of the role of hydrolyzed infant formulas in allergy prevention.

OBJECTIVE To critically examine the published literature to determine whether feeding hydrolyzed infant formulas from birth has a role in allergy prevention. DATA SOURCES We identified data through a MEDLINE search using allergy prevention and infant formulas as indexing terms. The search was restricted to 1985 through the present, English-language articles, and human subjects. STUDY SELECT...

Nutricional value of two protein hydolysates selected for the design of a new therapeutic infant formula

Background Breastfeeding is the gold standard of infant feeding, however not all infants with cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) tolerate human milk. In these cases, it seems recommended the use of extensively hydrolyzed formula (eHF). Preliminary analyses such as antigenicity and protein quality evaluation are needed to ensure that new formula will be nutritionally suitable, tolerated and safe ...

Tolerance of a standard intact protein formula versus a partially hydrolyzed formula in healthy, term infants

BACKGROUND Parents who perceive common infant behaviors as formula intolerance-related often switch formulas without consulting a health professional. Up to one-half of formula-fed infants experience a formula change during the first six months of life. METHODS The objective of this study was to assess discontinuance due to study physician-assessed formula intolerance in healthy, term infants...

Hydrolyzed Protein in Infant Feeding

Milk proteins are an essential component of the diet of preterm infants who have high requirements. Hydrolyzed proteins (HPs) have been introduced in infants’ formulas (HPFs) to treat gastrointestinal disorders and to prevent allergic diseases. Several studies have evaluated the adequacy of HPs in preterm infants. Protein source significantly influences plasma amino acid concentrations. Protein...

Hydrolyzed Protein in Infant Feeding

Hydrolyzed proteins are used worldwide in the therapeutic management of infants with allergic manifestations and have long been proposed as a dietetic measure to prevent allergy in at risk infants. The degree and method of hydrolysis, protein source and non-nitrogen components characterize different hydrolyzed formulas (HFs) and may determine clinical efficacy, tolerance and nutritional effects...
